Yesterday it was key lime pie. Today it’s blueberry muffins from the best bakery in town. And Joyce never asks him why he has suddenly started braving the sunlight to bring her treats when the girls are safely gone and she’s alone in the house. Just accepts his gifts and eats them greedily, as if they are her last meal. Which they are, though she doesn’t know it. He does, though, and he knows there’s nothing to be done about it. Death will claim her soon, far too soon, though no one knows it but him. He’s glad she doesn’t know, glad she’s enjoying her last days with her daughters, and with him, blissfully unaware of the darkness about to steal her away forever.
